Denizen Research Study
User Researcher | December 2017
This is a playtest study I conducted to identify any player frustration within the level design of a student project. The game tested, Denizen, is a 2D action platformer in which the player traverses the environment using elemental abilities to overcome obstacles. The game was made in Unity.
I was solely responsible for acquiring 20 participants, moderating the study, analyzing/coding the data, and writing the final report. Using a custom heatmap that was implemented into the game, I was able to visualize every participant’s routes throughout the level in order to identify key areas that participants struggled with the most.
Below is a link to the full report, which includes my testing methodology, results, and analysis. Attached to the end of the report is a report specifically for the designers of the team, calling out strong areas of the game and areas of improvement.
